Paragraph breaks lost in notifications when I go to Visual view

Note: Please add <br /> in the email message to add a new line. Enter key will not be considered as new line.
I've done that throughout my notification but as soon as I click on 'Visual' view to check how it will look, it loses all of the <br /> and puts the whole notification back onto one line.
It's not obvious that it does this as it looks fine in the Visual box, it's only when you check an actual email notification that you realise it's happened.
Clicking back into the 'Text' view shows that all the <br /> have been removed.
